|15:55||General discussion session of the Belgian Forum for Plasma Science chaired by E. Desoppere|
E. Desoppere announced that R. Weynants (ERM-KMS) and himself, who are two of the three present spokesmen and founders of the Belgian Forum for Plasma Science (BFPS) want to resign from their administrative functions at the end of this meeting. They have served as officers of BFPS for 3 years.
A. Bogaerts (UIA) and G. Van Oost (UG) are proposed as the new spokespersons of BFPS. All the participants approved this proposition.
J. Lemaire (IASB-BIRA) agreed to stay in charge as the third spokesman for one more year. He has been
appointed to become the representative of the Belgian Forum for Plasma Science at Council
meetings of the Belgian Physical Society (BPS OR BNV-SBP)
He will attend the General Statutory Meeting of BPS that will be held 17th December at BASF Antwerp NV. Indeed, BFPS had asked to become a "Corporate Member" of BPS. This request will be discussed at this statutory meeting of BPS.
J. Lemaire will report on this issue in a circular e-mail message to all members of the BFPS.
J. Lemaire agreed to collect the abstracts for the annual Plasma-Astrophysics-Geophysics session to be held next year at the GA of BPS. He agreed to organize this session in collaboration with the other spokespersons. Poster papers will again be previewed and summarized as short oral presentations, just like last year (3 minutes & 1 viewgraph per poster).
P. Dumortier (ERM-KMS) has been asked to become the Secretary of BFPS. He kindly accepted this responsibility.
P. Dumortier has been asked to continue maintaining and updating the BFPS Web site. He accepted this task.
He will include hyperlinks toward new Web pages displaying (1) the minutes of this and future BFPS meetings,
(2) announcements of conferences/seminars in the field of Plasma Science, (3) e-mail addresses,
(4) news groups, (5) "any other business"
Any major new update or events posted on these Web pages should be announced to the BFPS members by a brief e-mail message circulated by P. Dumortier. It was suggested that post-mail or fax letters be used for the more important announcements or issues.
It has been pointed out that the Belgian Committee of
URSI (Union Radio Science International has a Commission H entitled "Plasma waves".
The Belgian Committee of URSI meets every 2 or 3 months at the premise of the Belgian
Royal Academy of Sciences. Each year in December it organizes a Forum at different Universities to give
Ph.D. students the opportunity to present their work.
J. Lemaire pointed out that BFPS might become more involved in the activities of this international organization, and might propose interested delegates/representatives of BFPS as associate members of the Belgian URSI Commission H on "Plasma waves".
The submission of a funding/research proposal to the FWO Scientific Network was discussed in detail. Several suggestions have been made from participants. Prof. Gijbels (UIA) made pertinent suggestions based on his past experience with FWO committees.
The participants welcomed the participation of Industry in the activities of BFPS. Various suggestions were made to establish links and joined activities with the Scientific Communities concerned in Belgium by Solid State Physics and Vacuum. Members of the Belgian Forum for Plasma Science who have contacts with industrial plasma-users or partners should inform them of the activities of the BFPS and invite them in participating to the activities of the Forum (e.g. the next GA of BPS in LLN, 25-26 May 2000).
The next meeting of the BFPS will be organized by R. Weynants at ERM-KMS on February 24, 2000.
BIRA-IASB should host a BFPS meeting in October 2000.
The meeting was closed at 17:00, after J. Lemaire, in the name of all the participants, had thanked
E. Desoppere for organizing this meeting at the University of Ghent.
He also thanked him and R. Weynants for their pioneering action and efforts within BFPS since its foundation in 1997.
